‘Direct BN reps who win will sit with ruling parties in DUN’

KUCHING: The winning direct BN candidates will be seated with representatives of the ruling parties at the State Legislative Assembly.

This was confirmed by the Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nasar after a press conference during which Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem announced the dissolution of the state assembly yesterday.

Asfia said should direct BN candidates win in the upcoming election they would be seated at the BN section in the chamber.

“I wish to emphasis here that all the candidates are under BN.

“You don’t use the respective symbols of the component parties.”

“Each candidate only uses the BN symbol.

“No component party will use their respective symbols, only the BN symbol.

“And if they are direct BN candidates, as all of them are, then their seats will be with BN.”

He said arrangement had been made for the 82 elected representatives.

“And we have adjusted our seating arrangement – the chairs and so forth – for all 82 members. From 36 seats in the old DUN we now have 82.

“All direct BN candidates shall be seated in the BN section of the chambers,” said Asfia.

Over the years, the state assembly has expanded, from the initial 36 seats in the general council under the White Rajahs to 48 seats in 1968 when the first state assembly convened.

The number of seats later increased to 56 and by in 1996, there were already 62 seats. In 2006, another nine seats were added, making it 71 seats.

Following the passing of the State Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2014 in Nov 2014, the state legislative assembly now has 82 seats after an additional of 11 new seats.-Borneo Post
