KUCHING: A total of seven police reports were received throughout the state in connection with the nomination process yesterday, with police investigating five and referring two to the Election Commission.
When contacted yesterday, state CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said the seven reports were made in Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Meradong, Sarikei, Bintulu and Kapit.
“We are investigating four of the reports for alleged offences under the Election Offences Act 1954 and another for an alleged scuffle between two sets of supporters. The remaining two cases have been referred to the Election Commission for their action,” he said.
According to Dev Kumar, three of the cases were related to displaying or distributing election campaign materials without a permit issued by the State Election Officer, which was an offence under Section 24B(4) of the Election Offences Act 1954.
“Another case is relating to an act or statement with a view or tendency to promote feelings of ill will or discontent between two parties, which is an offence under Section 4A(1) of the same Act.”
As for the alleged scuffle which took place outside the nomination centre in Kapit but did not result in any injuries, Dev Kumar said the case has been classified as voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
He went on to advise all parties concerned, especially supporters, to be law abiding and peaceful throughout the campaign period.
“We have enough teams on the ground to ensure no untoward incident occur during this period,” he assured.-Borneo post
