KUCHING: Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh disbursed minor rural project (MRP) grants totalling RM155,000 to several Kuching-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs) here yesterday.
Wong said more NGOs here would be given similar grants, like what he had done in places such as Sibu, Sarikei, Bintangor, Miri, Limbang and Sri Aman.
“I am very touched and grateful to the representatives who made an effort to come here to receive the grants,” said Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister.
He admitted the money might be insufficient to cover all their (NGO) expenses, but at least it could lessen their financial burden.
“Requests that come to me for grants are numerous. I know all of you are trying your best to manage your respective organisations, and I know it is not easy because you need funds.”
Wong pledged to lobby for more money to beef up MRP allocations next year.
On another matter, Wong said being the only full and senior minister who is a Chinese, his role to take care of the Chinese community in the state was a big challenge.
“Nevertheless, I will try and do my best to do what I can to help the various organisations who come to me for help.”
The NGOs that received grants yesterday were Sarawak Hopoh Association (Women Section), The Carnation Club of Kuching and Samarahan, Kuching Dynamic Community Association, Sam San Kuet Bong Temple Devotees Society, Saberkas Batu Lintang branch, Kuching City Toastmasters Mandarin Club, Kelab Kebudayaan Jasmani Ho, Kuching South Hawkers Association, Kuching Hockien Association Youth Section, Kuching Hainan Association, Nan Yen Folk Orchestra, The Loving Society Kuching, Kuching Hindu Youth Organisation, Sarawak Chiang Hsia Huang Clan Association, The Dance Academy and RPR Taman Sri Cahaya Tondong residential committee.-Borneo Post
