KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem has been called on to come up with a long-term policy on annual allocations for Chinese-medium schools in the state.
Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei said this would free the Chinese community in Sarawak from becoming ‘beggars’ when it comes to asking for government allocations.
During a press conference yesterday, Wong said Adenan should walk the extra mile and not hold allocations “as ransom against the people”.
“Announcing the RM500,000 grant for Kuching Chung Hua Primary Schools (on Thursday), the chief minister asked the Chinese community to help him when the time comes as he is helping Chinese schools.
“Adenan can make the allocations for Chinese and mission schools budgetary, which means the people would not have to wait for allocations,” he said.
Wong explained that making allocations budgetary would mean Chinese-medium schools would be given a certain amount every year.
“I appreciate the allocations to Chinese schools, but the Chief Minister should come up with a long-term policy benefiting Sarawakians.
“First of all, he has to refrain from the ‘You help me; I help you’ mentality,” he added.-Borneo Post
