Awang Tengah reminds media of role as disseminator of truth

KUCHING: The media has been reminded of its important role as disseminator of information between the rakyat and the government in striving towards a more progressive and developed society. According to Second Resource Planning and Environment Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, the media is the vital cog in the ever changing system linking the people and the government and vice versa.
“Through the stories you publish and news you broadcast, you perform the role of development communicators, more so in a rapidly developing state like Sarawak,” said Awang Tengah at the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA) Media Nite at Hilton Hotel on Friday.
He praised the media for their coverage in highlighting the sincere commitment by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem in his efforts to spur economic and development growth for the state.
He noted that the media were riding high on success stories of Adenan after he introduced various policies which had benefitted the people since he took the helm as chief minister.
“Write stories about these ‘feel good’ factors through your articulations and be responsible in your write-ups. Above all, play your part to help us in our bid to ‘catch up’ with the rest of the pack,” he said alluding to the more developed states in the country.
“By reporting such stories, you are actually playing a part in recognising the state government’s efforts to develop Sarawak into a more progressive and developed state,” the Minister of Industrial Development added.
Awang Tengah commented that the government appreciated the role played by local journalists whom he described as responsible in their reporting.
“With the media now not confined to print but also digital news and information are now reaching a wider audience, hence whatever information you disseminate must be truthful and justifiable,” he added.
Also present at the event were Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications) Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom and Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Water Supply) Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran and KDJA president Yong Kiet Seng. – Borneo Post.
