BAU: The Public Works Department (JKR) has taken over construction of the delayed SMK Singai project, and the new completion date is 2017.
Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie said JKR was in the process of getting the tender ready for work to resume. The project is thus far only 50 per cent completed.
The new scope of the project would see SMK Singai’s student capacity increased to 1,000.
The school would also have boarding facilities that can house about 800 students.
The new proposed project will also include sports facilities and a multipurpose hall that was scrapped from the project’s original package.
Nansian, who is also assistant minister of community services, believed the tender could be out as early as next month. Barring any other complications, he hoped the school would be ready in time for the 2017 academic session.
“With JKR managing the project, hopefully it will be completed within this next two years,” he told reporters when met at Redeems Centre near here yesterday.
Nansian was at Redeems Centre for the Bau district-level 2015 Jalur Gemilang Tour celebration.
The school project, approved under the first rolling plan of the 10th Malaysia Plan (10 MP), was launched by then Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi at the school’s building site in Kampung Apar on April 15, 2011.
Construction commenced two years later, on April 30, and it was supposed to be completed by April this year.
The original allocation of the project was said to be RM60 million, but it was reduced to RM45 million after the multipurpose hall was scrapped from the original package.
“The hiccup was not on the government’s part, but was due to problems faced by the contractor. We wanted this
project to be completed this year, but due to problems faced by the contractor, the government had to resort to getting JKR to manage the project to expedite its completion,” said Nansian.
He mentioned that according to the consultant, the project was currently at 50 per cent completion. With increased capacity, inclusion of sports facilities and multipurpose hall, the cost of the project would also increase, he added.-Borneo Post
