Live in peace, respect one another, people told

KUCHING: Sarawakians must continue to live in peace and respect one another.

A Political Secretary to the Chief Minister councillor Kijan Toynbee said the people must respect each other’s values in order to live in racial harmony.

“This is a culture unique to Sarawak and we must keep it that way,” she said when representing Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan at a dinner organised by Batu Kawah Resettlement Scheme Area Recreational Club at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre here on Friday.

The objective of the dinner, themed ‘Segulai Sejalai’ was meant to get the community closer to Mawan who is Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) president as well as Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) president and also Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong who is also United People’s Party (UPP) vice-chairman and youth chief.

Kijan said eating on the same table with people of different races, religions and backgrounds was a manifestation of a Sarawak culture that the people should be proud of.

“Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem wants Sarawakians to continue having this cultural unity so that we can live in harmony and progress together in tandem with national development,” she said.

Kijan later announced Mawan’s pledge of RM25,000 to the club to hold their yearly activities. She also said Mawan had sponsored 10 tables at the dinner.

Meanwhile, UPP Batu Kawah branch chairman Pemanca Liu Thian Leong, who represented Rayong said UPP wanted to bring real changes and real development to Batu Kawah.

“You have a choice after 20 years under Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and Democratic Action Party (DAP) that you have voted. But (now) UPP is ready to serve the people in Batu Kawah,” said Liu, who has been bandied about by political observers as one of the potential Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates in the next state poll to wrest the seat from the DAP.

He said the party was set to be the voice and aspiration of the people and who wanted to fight for a better tomorrow for the people.

“UPP is on the ground with the people and is always ready to hear their problems. We are ready and have the confidence to bring about change,” he said.

Liu announced that Rayong had pledged RM3,000 in government grant to the club while he himself gave another RM3,000.

Late, Kijan, Liu and the dinner organising chairman Anthony Tukang gave away cash incentives to members’ children who did very well in the public examinations last year.

Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Kuching branch) chairman Datuk Paduka Dr Anthony Nait was also present at the dinner.-Borneo Post
