So when is Najib quitting, social media users ask after Mukhriz steps down

Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir’s resignation as Kedah menteri besar today prompted social media users to ask when would Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak step down as well.

As “Kedah MB” began trending in Twitter, Malaysians took to the microblogging site to express their disappointment over Mukhriz’s fate. They said the people have lost support in Najib, yet he remained in power while a leader, such as Mukhriz, whom they said enjoyed public support, was axed.

“The people wanted a change in PM, but the Kedah MB was changed instead. Yet another disappointment,” tweeted Wee Su Lin (@sulinwee). “We need new PM, not new Kedah MB,” said huzaitieyahyaa (@HuzairieYahya96).

Twitter user @ajijudinn even wrote a short poem in Malay on the issue: “Pergi kedai cari teh kundur, ternampak Mukhriz membeli tauhu, ku harapkan naib undur, tup tup dapat MB baru”. (Went to the store to find winter melon tea/ Saw Mukhriz buy some tofu/ Was hoping Najib would step down/ Got a new MB instead.)

Others mocked the new Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, saying he admitted he was not on the same level as Mukhriz, who graduated with a degree in business administration from Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan and degree in management from Boston University, Massachusetts.

“Congratulations Ahmad Bashah for new Kedah MB post. This goes to say education means nothing when it comes to Politics,” said hilmy yakap (@hilmyyakap). Mark Adam (@matkhadam) quipped that Ahmad Bashah’s appointment inspired him to apply for the Perlis menteri besar post with just his SPM certificate.

“Today’s motivation. Don’t stop dreaming. Think big. SRP (LCE) can be a Menteri Besar. Kuikuikui Kedah MB,” said MHS @_secism. Twitter users also predicted that Ahamd Bashah’s appointment would be the end of Barisan Nasional (BN) in Kedah. “mukhriz was replaced as kedah mb, bn can bid farewell to kedah in pru14, so enjoy it while it lasts,” said Muhammad Irfan @muhd_irfaaan.

On January 20, Bashah led a press conference comprising Kedah Umno division and wing leaders, all of whom declared they had lost confidence in Mukhriz’s leadership and wanted Najib to intervene.

The leadership tussle came to a close when Mukhriz announced this morning he was resigning as menteri besar after losing the support of the majority of the assemblymen. – January 3, 2016. - The Malaysian Insider.
