Ministry to set aside RM1 bln under 11MP for various projects in Sarawak

KUCHING: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will allocate RM1 billion under the 11th Malaysia Plan for various projects in Sarawak.

Its minister, Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, said priority would be given to the Kuching Flood Mitigation Project, which would be implemented next year. Other projects include forestry, drainage and river cleaning.

“A big portion of the allocation will be used for the Kuching Flood Mitigation Project. We will build a canal from Sg Salak to Sg Sarawak to divert water so that it does not flow to Kuching city.

“Besides that, the river treatment projects will be implemented for Sg Tabuan, Sg Bintangor and Sg Maong, making the overall cost for the Kuching Flood Mitigation project and river treatment to be about RM500 million,” he told reporters covering the Santubong constituency-level ‘Program Membara Solidariti Malaysia’ that was held at SK Pulo in conjunction with the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations yesterday.

Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP, said flood mitigation projects would also be implemented in Sg Kemena in Bintulu and Sg Miri and the basin.

“Other projects that will be implemented include Batang Kayan, Lundu, and the rehabilitation of Batang Sadong and Sg Kota Samarahan, apart from the coastal protection projects in Buntal, Pantai Puteri and Sematan. Allocations will be also given to the wetland park project that is a project under the Sarawak Forest Department and the Heart of Borneo project.” Earlier in his speech, Wan Junaidi chided certain quarters for trying to promote the use of the old Sarawak flag, saying they were trying to bring Sarawakians back to the 1960s, where Sarawak was very backward and the people were so poor they could not even afford a bicycle.

He said Sarawakians now are enjoying a better livelihood compared to the 1960s, that even students could drive cars and motorcycles to their schools and universities.

Wan Junaidi said the existence of Malaysia was a reality, adding Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem had made it very clear that Sarawak would always be part of Malaysia but would claim her rights as stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“The chief minister tried his best to discuss with the federal government. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has instructed the Chief Secretary to the Government to discuss with the State Secretary on devolution of power in line with the Malaysia Agreement signed in 1963.”

He said the federal government under the leadership of Najib was sincere to return the autonomy to the state as what was promised in 1963.

With the state election looming, Wan Junaidi urged all those present to support Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who was present at the event.

“The chief minister said we (BN) are ready anytime. Wait until the 11 state seats are approved in Parliament. When they are gazetted in November, let the chief minister decide when to have the election.”

Among those present at the event were his wife Datin Sri Feona Wan Junaidi, Dr Abdul Rahman and community leaders.-Borneo Post
