MoU with Indonesia on the haze postponed


KUCHING: The meeting between Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his Indonesian counterpart on the transboundary haze yesterday has been postponed.

According to a statement from the ministry, it was meant to discuss haze-related issues, and to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the worsening haze condition in several parts of Indonesia.

In fact, a state of emergency had been declared in certain areas in Indonesia, and the minister who was supposed to meet Wan Junaidi involved in distributing aid to such areas.

Wan Junaidi told a press conference on Wednesday evening that he would be going to Indonesia soon to sign a new MoU to tackle the transboundary haze.

The MoU had been postponed once already from Sept 18 to 24.

The whole state of Sarawak recorded a moderate Air Pollutant Index (API) level as of 12pm on Thursday: the highest was Samarahan with an API of 98 followed by Sarikei (94) and Kuching (92). Other places were Sibu (81), Sri Aman (69), Bintulu (69), Miri (62), Kapit (60) and Limbang (58).

By 1pm, the reading had either dropped slightly or remained the same. The highest was Samarahan (96), followed by Sarikei (93) and Kuching (90). Other places were Sibu (79), Sri Aman (67), Bintulu (68), Miri (62), Kapit (59) and Limbang (58).

By 4pm, the downward trend was apparent with readings at Samarahan (92), Sarikei (87), Kuching (85), Sibu (74), Sri Aman (61), Bintulu (67), Miri (62), Kapit (57) and Limbang (56).

According to the Department of Environment, 51-100 is considered a moderate reading and 101-200, unhealthy.-Borneo Post
