“Education is very important as it nurtures the younger generation to grow up loving this country and work in concert towards nation building.
“I think the main thing that makes people united is the spirit of patriotism,” he said when reporters asked him to elaborate a point he made in his speech at the ‘Tabika Kemas’ P.212 Sibu National Day celebration at SK Abang Ali here yesterday.
Dr Annuar said children must be well informed that this is the country that we all love and cherish. Some 600 preschoolers from 54 Kemas kindergartens participated in the celebration. There was also a National Day fashion competition. It was divided into boys and girls categories.
Turning to the older generation, Dr Annuar figured they played important roles in preparing the country for the future generation. Petty issues should be set aside as they do not have positive bearings, he pointed out.
“We have come to a maturity stage as Sarawak having achieved 52 years of independence already. I think all petty issues should not be brought up just for political mileage or to stir emotions among the people. These things should be resolved amicably. If we keep on arguing about minor issues, we could lose sight on the main agenda – development.”
He added that while dates were important from a historical perspective, the main agenda for the younger generation should be to get them together to develop the country through collective efforts.
The Community Development Department (Kemas) state deputy director Dayang Monalizawati Abang Ismail, who represented the state director, also spoke at the function.
