SWP hopes to be admitted into Pakatan Harapan

KUCHING: Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) hopes to be admitted as a member of the new opposition front, Pakatan Harapan (Harapan).

Its president Larry Sng said the party had been working towards this but so far, it had yet to be accepted.

“The question now is not whether we want to join Harapan but whether they want to accept us to be a part of them. The ball is now in their court,” Sng told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said the party had two meetings with the state DAP last month over the issue.

“There is no major issue between SWP and DAP. There is a general understanding between us. As for state PKR, we are not sure of their stand yet.”

On the number of seats SWP would be contesting in the next state election, Sng said the party would announce the candidates or its potential line-up in the next few weeks.

For himself, he said his candidacy had already been endorsed by Bukit Goram Division while Munan Laja’s candidacy was announced by Katibas Division recently.

“A couple of divisions will follow suit to announce their candidates. We leave it for the divisions to make their decisions.”

Sng said while different divisions within SWP were scanning for possible candidates, the party itself was also negotiating with other component parties within the opposition front on the possible line-up for the next state election.

“SWP is eyeing a few particular areas and we are negotiating with DAP to see if we could get them.

“We hope there would be straight fight with BN (Barisan Nasional) in all the constituencies,” said the former Pelagus assemblyman.-Borneo Post
