Residents want road upgrading done soon

KUCHING: Patience is running out for residents along Jalan Ong Kwan Hin and they are calling upon the authorities to look into hastening the upgrading of the road which has been delayed for four months.

In a joint press conference organised by Ong Kwan Hin Road Community Watch at its chairman Datuk Seri John Lau’s home here yesterday, they said the project – which was carried out on the entire length and breadth of Jalan Ong Kwan Hin – had been dragging on for six months since it started in the middle of May this year.

“The project was scheduled to be completed in two months but it seems that the completion is not yet in sight. Therefore we are giving the relevant authorities to take steps for the job to be completed within one month,” said Lau.

“Despite our complaints and four letters written to the Kuching City North Commission (DBKU), no action seems to have taken place,” he added.

He said the road works were causing inconvenience and endangering the residents and visitors due to poor signage and condition.

“It also had caused damage to cars and their tyres, pollution and muddy condition while at the same time noisy and dirtying the vicinity and homes of the residents,” he said, adding there were occasions when water pipes and electric cables were damaged, affecting the daily lives of the residents.

He added that there was a time when the project came to a standstill when its workers were arrested for working without a work permit, and properties such as perimeter drains, hill slopes and garden landscape were damaged due to the construction works.

On another matter, the committee is also urging the relevant authorities to look into the Satok Uptown Market, which they said still continued to this day despite the directive by Minister of Tourism Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom to relocate.

“This Uptown Market has generated rubbish and litter, caused the roadside grass patches to be destroyed, and interrupted traffic flow along Jalan Crookshank and Jalan Taman Budaya.

“The noise levels experienced during late nights from motorbikes, stage shows and karaoke singing, especially between 11pm and 3am, have caused endless sleepless nights for the neighbourhood.

“Any noisy activities should stop by 10pm to ensure that the residents get a good sleep,” Lau said.-Borneo Post
