Does DAP only favour those living in urban areas?

QUICK TAKE: The recent plight faced by PKR Penanti assemblywoman Dr Norlela Ariffin, who broke down in tears during a sitting of the Penang state assembly, raises the question whether the DAP truly cares for its constituents.

Last week, Norlela was overcome with emotion after begging for state funds to resolve problems faced by Malay villagers which she represents.

“I am so sad ... DAP is supposed to be a social democratic party that listens... I spoke for an hour and the only one who listened was Padang Kota,” she said, referring to local government, traffic management and flood mitigation exco Chow Kon Yeow.”

She lamented that she had been waiting for the winding-up speeches for replies to the issues she had raised regarding the woes that include infrastructure for homestay programmes, lack of infrastructure like roads, frequent flooding, illegal factories, as well as the lack of proper jetties for fishermen.

“I have been requesting for funds from the state to carry out projects to resolve the issues faced by my constituents but until now, there’s no allocation.

“I’m not getting any answers to these issues affecting the people in my constituency.

“There are 28 kampung in Penanti and they all need assistance. I have been raising the matter for the last two years,” said Dr Norlela and she broke down, crying.

“I waited every day until the winding up speeches. These are the answers I am getting. What do I tell the village folk?

“When are we going to see high-impact projects? Does the state not care about the people of Permatang Pauh, who Anwar Ibrahim has spent his life defending?

“I fail to understand why the state refuses to understand and refuses to listen,” she said, losing her cool.

But try as she might the funds are all moving away to urban areas – where the DAP draws most of it support.

MIC Youth chief C Sivarraajh, in a statement, said: “She was left with no choice but to break down and cry. She was overcome with emotion due to the injustice done to her.

“It shows the calloused and hard-nosed policies that the DAP practises.”

Datuk Roslan Saidin (BN-Pinang Tunggal) expressed sadness at the plight of Dr Norlela and rightly so.

He too represents rural folk who have got nothing from the state government.

Sivaraajh said that the DAP should be ashamed of itself to allow one of its own allies to break down and cry.

“It goes to show how it only represents urban areas and totally neglects rural areas like that of Dr Norlela.”

It goes against all that the party has been preaching at its many “Impian” campaigns which claim to bring development to backward areas, he said, adding, “It’s a false campaign to hoodwink the people and only get their votes.”

For people like Dr Norlela, who knows and have been frustrated for years over such issues, the “Impian” campaigns are a sham.

This has now been highlighted by DAP’s own Pakatan Harapan ally – PKR.-The Ant Daily
