Jabu wants quality Dayak graduates

KUCHING: Dayak university graduates have been urged to help the government elevate the community’s standard of education.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang said there needs to be a focus on quality Dayak graduates.

“We have many Dayak graduates now but we want to have more quality and knowledgeable graduates who can compete with others in the job market and have better job and career prospects,” he said at the University Malaya Dayak Alumni Association (Padum) dinner on Friday.

“Before when we had a handful of Dayak graduates, we had very high quality even though we do not have the facilities like now.”

He attributed this to the selection process and the resilience of those chosen.

“They came from rural backgrounds and had the discipline, which is no longer found in today’s Dayak graduates,” he said.

Jabu called on Padum to guide the present Dayak undergraduates to prevent them from being easily distracted.

“We live in a world where we can get easily influenced by factors that are not healthy.

“These factors, if not checked and changed, can lead to less quality human capital,” he said.

He urged Padum to work with other Dayak alumni associations to benefit more Dayak undergraduates.

Jabu added that he supports Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s call for the mastering of English in addition to Bahasa Malaysia, because English is a universal language.-Borneo Post
