SARIKEI: Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom hopes that Dayaks in the state will be proud of the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) and its wing Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) as they are the treasures of the community.
This was due to the fact that both organisations are apolitical and have been serving the people faithfully for many years.
“Let us ensure that SDNU and SIDS do not become obsolete in this modern age. We need to find ways to remain relevant for as long as we can,” he added.
Mawan, who is also SDNU president was speaking during a fund-raising dinner organised by SIDS Sarikei branch held here on Friday.
During the dinner he called for all SDNU members to find ways to attract more youths to join the two organisations as it will benefit the Dayaks in the future.
“Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders. Let us do our part in grooming them for a better future for our people (Dayaks),” he said.
Having said that, Mawan commented that no matter what age the person is, as long as the person is a Dayak, the person is welcomed to join SDNU or SIDS as the two organisations welcome as many members as possible.
After his speech, he gave away incentives to children of SIDS members from Sarikei who achieved excellent examination results during the same event.
Meanwhile Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa who was also present during the dinner event said that Dayaks under the state government headed by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan
Sri Adenan Satem will continue to prosper and enjoy development.
He hopes that SIDS will do their part in forming a task-force which tackles Dayak education and economic issues.
“Education and economic issues are the most important things affecting the Dayak community these days. Let SIDS or even SDNU be used as a platform for Dayaks to discuss and tackle these issues in the future,” he said.
Both Mawan and Rayong each donated RM20,000 and RM7,000, respectively, to the SIDS Sarikei branch for the purpose of helping the organisation organise their activities in the future.
Present during the dinner were Sarikei resident Dr Anthony Valentine, Sarikei District Council chairman Chan Pan Chan and SIDS Sarikei branch chairperson Rosy Jita Siduk.-Borneo Post
