The “citizens’ declaration” led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad seeking the replacement of the elected Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government is merely political expediency that ignores the people’s welfare, two senior Sarawak leaders with the ruling coalition said today.
Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian expressed regret that the country’s former leader would stoop to personal attacks against an elected prime minister.
“As a person who has done so much for Malaysia in the past, he should have restrained himself from uttering personal attack against the prime minister,” he told reporters here, referring to Dr Mahathir’s series of allegations against Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Dr Sim also criticised the retired prime minister and the group of prominent politicians from both sides of the divide as well as civil society leaders for campaigning against the government while the country is struggling to deal with economic issues.
“If he and his group want to topple the prime minister, they can do it in the coming general election, but not at this moment” he said.
Conversely, Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) Youth chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof called out opposition politicians for choosing to align themselves with the man they have persistently blamed for the country’s woes.
He said the “citizens' declaration” seeking the ouster of Najib is proof of the desperate politics i the peninsula born of the Pakatan Harapan opposition pact’s lack of ideas coupled with Dr Mahathir’s personal vengeance.
“It is disgusting to see PKR and DAP lose any remaining shred of political integrity to join forces with a man whom PKR and DAP Sarawak had repeatedly condemned for decades (for having) neglected Sarawak's development in favour of peninsular Malaysia,” he said.
The federal works minister said no prime minister has been as caring of Sarawak’s welfare than the incumbent Najib.
“The Sarawak BN recognises this and we work based on actual contributions rather than political desperation,” Fadillah added.
Dr Mahathir and 57 other prominent public personalities, including human rights campaigners, signed a declaration in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to push for the removal of the Najib administration, adding that they would do so democratically.-Malay Mail
