KUCHING: The entry of 12 prominent Dayaks into the state DAP on Sunday marked a new chapter for the party, says Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong.
She said the willingness of this group of professionals to join DAP proved that the Dayaks accepted the party’s ideology and vision.
“I’m proud they are willing to take bold and brave steps to join DAP, which is not a single-race party but a party of all races.
“I hope that with them joining the party, we can work together to build a better Sarawak and a better Malaysia,” she told a press conference at the party’s headquarters yesterday.
Yong, who is also state DAP organising secretary, said the state’s Dayak community, which stands at around 44 per cent of the population, played an important role in ensuring the state would continue to develop towards a better future.
“If Sarawak wishes to see new and good changes, we cannot rely just on the urban voters but also rural voters where the majority of the Dayaks come from.
“I believe if we can have a breakthrough in the rural constituencies in the forthcoming state election by winning the support of the Dayak community, it will boost the momentum and eventually lead to another political tsunami in the 14th General Election so that Malaysia can be saved from its failing state,” she said.
The 12 new Dayak members comprising Paul Raja (practising lawyer), Richard Lias (secretary general of Dayak National Congress), Baba Emperan (businessman), Ali Basah (practising lawyer), Frankie Bedindang (ex-Walikota of Kapit and now planter by profession), Douglas Alau (former university lecturer and former executive secretary of PBDS), David Kalom (former deputy director of a statutory body), Granda Aing (businessman), Robert Tella (Lt Commander (rtd) of the navy), Edward Agong (former teacher) and Gabriel Ajan (former Petronas employee) received a warm welcome from DAP Parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen at state DAP headquarters on Sunday.-Borneo Post
