Uphill battle for opposition in Sarawak polls, says PKR

The odds are stacked against the opposition party in the Sarawak elections as Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem is very “logical and sensible”, says state PKR chairman Baru Bian.

But the party was actually preparing for the next general election, where they can bring real change, he added.

“Although it seems to be an uphill task for Sarawak, we believe there will be a greater chance in GE14,” he told reporters after launching PKR’s “Donate RM26” fundraiser at a hotel in Kuching.

“The state election is a great challenge because the chief minister is talking very logical, very sensible, but that is not all, as we have to look at the big picture,” he said.

Adenan who took office less than two years ago has implemented policies benefiting the people such as lowering electricity tariffs, abolishing tolls, curbing illegal logging and amending the land code.

Adenan’s sensible stand on religious freedom and the state’s autonomy also resonate well with Sarawakians.

At the New Year's Eve celebrations last night, Adenan hinted that the state election would be held in March.

Baru, a customary land rights lawyer and Ba Kelalan assemblyman who had been offered by Adenan to join Barisan Nasional, said he chose to stay with PKR because he believed the real change in Malaysia was coming.

He said the party was looking beyond Sarawak and preparing for both coming state polls and the next general election, which he described as the real battle.

PKR is set to meet with DAP and Amanah this month to discuss seat negotiations in order to have one-to-one contests with BN in the coming state polls.

Baru also welcomed other opposition parties in the state, such as Sarawak Workers Party and PBDS, to work with Pakatan Harapan.-Malaysian Insider
