Two more seats to fill in SPDP election list

MIRI: The Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party’s candidate list for the next state elections is almost complete with only Bekenu and Batu Danau still a guessing game.

As a Barisan Nasional component party, the SPDP has usually been allocated eight seats: Tasik Biru, Krian, Meluan, Pakan, Bekenu, Marudi, Batu Danau and Ba’Kelalan.

In April last year SPDP president Tiong King Sing announced five candidates – lawyer Cila Nasu for Tasik Biru; lawyer Kilat Beriak (Krian); quantity surveyor Belayong Jampong (Meluan); businessman Brian Fung (Pakan); and lawyer Fabian Andrew Sigar (Ba kelalan).

The latest prospective candidate being lined up by the SPDP is Dr Penguang Manggil, a retired senior civil servant, whose last post was permanent secretary for the state Local Government and Community Development Ministry. He is being considered for Marudi.

Anthony Nogeh Gumbek, the SPDP secretary general, confirmed today that Dr Penguang would be the SPDP and BN candidate in Marudi.

He made the announcement at the Christmas and New Year celebrations at Rumah Berauh, Sg. Entulang, in Marudi.

“With a 3,000-strong crowd gathered here today, it is solid proof that the people in Marudi are ready to give their full support to Dr Penguang to replace the current elected representative,” he said.

The current assembly member for Marudi is Sylvester Entri Muran, the Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Water Supply). He quit SPDP and later joined Teras, a BN-friendly party.
