SIBU: A Pelagus constituent believes that former Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the constituency in the last state election, Stanley Nyitar, should be given the chance to recontest.
Major (Rtd) Moses Ripai believes that Stanley is still a suitable candidate as he (Stanely) is a Pelagus native.
“I think it is appropriate for (Land Development Minister and PRS president) Tan Sri Dr James Masing to choose him (Stanley) as the candidate for Pelagus — like what he did in 2011 (state election) when he chose Alexander Vincent to contest in Ngemah for the second time, which he won.
“The first time he (Alexander) stood in Ngemah was in 2006, when he lost. As such, the same could be done for Stanley in the next state election,” he told thesundaypost.
Moses, who is a voter in Sungai Amang, believed that Stanley’s loss in 2011 was due to his last-minute standing in Pelagus, which at the time was ‘politically unstable’.
“I know what Stanley is doing now because I am a strong supporter of him. I have been accompanying him to certain functions in Pelagus and from there, I could see that he has been gaining strong support from local constituents. It appears that the people want him to stand under BN-PRS in Pelagus.
“Thus, I bravely voice this out to the attention of Tan Sri James Masing and the BN leadership — for Stanley to be the BN-PRS candidate for Pelagus,” he stated.
Meanwhile, when contacted, Stanley did not say much about his chance of being renominated as a candidate for Pelagus, except that if given such mandate, he said: “Why not?”
In the 2011 state polls, Pelagus hosted a three-cornered fight between Stanley, George Lagong (Independent) and Edward Sumbang Asun of PKR.
Stanley polled 2,902 votes and Edward, 1,171; while George won with 5,740 votes.-BorneoPost
