Field more women in next election — Nancy

KUCHING: It is time for all of the state Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties to field more women as candidates in the next state election, said state BN Women secretary Nancy Shukri.

“Women form almost 50 per cent of the population. It is fair for more women to be given the opportunity to lead in politics,” she said in a statement here Friday.

Nancy also revealed that a meeting was held for the women’s wings of state BN component parties yesterday, namely Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).

Nancy, who is also PBB Women secretary, said the meeting held at PBB headquarters was the first for BN Women this year and the focus was on preparations for the election expected within the next few months.

Among matters raised at the meeting chaired by acting chairperson Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim were challenges and issues faced by the people today. Nancy said strategic action to be taken by the BN representatives was discussed. They also discussed programmes to enhance women’s knowledge of current political issues.

“Faced with challenges caused by social media, members were reminded to be wary of untrue stories spun by the opponents. Those involved in the campaign will be briefed on local and national issues that might be played out in the next state election.

“Overall, all the parties are prepared for the election. Their machineries are ready for the 82 seats to be contested by all BN components,” she said.

She also added that in the morning, the PBB Women wing exco members held their meeting at the same venue where they discussed their roles in the next election.

“Members have been actively moving on the ground to register new voters as well as recruit new party members,” said Nancy.-Borneo Post
