RM10 mln grant to help actualise MCC’s projects

MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) will use the RM10 million worth of special grants given by the state government to finance new projects for the city.

Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin said this after presenting the first distribution of the grant worth RM3.5 million to Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai at the council’s premises yesterday.

“This special grant was announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem during the Miri City 10th Anniversary Concert at Miri City Fan on May 16,” Lee said.

Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman, said the remaining amount of RM6.5 million would be given to the council later.

He pointed out that the first part of the allocation would be used to finance the council’s three approved projects.

The projects are the Green Community Hub (RM1 million), upgrading of Miri Handicraft Centre (RM2 million) and a RM500,000 allocation for tourism activities such as the organising of a tourism symposium and the publication of the Miri 10th Anniversary coffee table books.

Lee said that the council had identified an empty green lawn behind the Yakin Commercial Centre for the implementation of the Green Community Hub.

The area will be turned into a landscaped park for Yakin, Krokop and Pelita residents, featuring a jogging track, jungle gym, exercise lawn, children’s playground, biking hub, green/renewable energy education and awareness hub, a weekend flea market and an amphitheatre for arts and culture activities.

On the upgrading of Miri Handicraft Centre, Lee said that the project would be implemented in two phases.

Upgrading works in the first phase will include refurbishment of the existing hall to provide a formal reception lobby and a small multi-purpose hall which can be used for exhibitions.

There are also plans for a stage and changing room for small-scale cultural performance, a cantilevered entrance canopy, stalls for sale of handicraft and art works, outdoor exhibition space, café as well as more parking spaces.

The second phase will focus on the construction of an administrative office, arts and crafts museum and storage space.-Borneo Post
