KUCHING: Bumiputera constituents of Batu Kawah have been advised on returning their votes to Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next state election.

Local Iban community leader Penghulu Sidu John felt that the Bumiputeras in the urban areas had been sidelined by the opposition, as far as development was concerned.

He admitted that there was envy in seeing their counterparts in BN stronghold areas enjoy better progress than them.

“Now is the time that we stop becoming mere observers in Batu Kawah. Come next election, the Bumiputera voters must return their votes to the BN,” he said at a fund-raising dinner recently organised by Taman Desa Wira Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

Adding on, Sidu said he was impressed with United People’s Party (UPP) and Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) in that these political parties fulfilled and met the requirements of the constituents in Batu Kawah.

“There is nothing wrong for us to have new political parties, as long as they subscribe to the able leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem and also that of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“Moreover UPP and Teras have been recognised as BN-Plus (parties), as announced by these two BN leaders (Najib and Adenan) during the June 4 BN rally.”

UPP Batu Kawah chairman Pemanca Liu Thian Leong, who also attended the dinner, said if he were to be nominated by BN to stand in Batu Kawah in the polls, he hoped that the Bumiputera electorate there would give him the opportunity to serve them.

“I pledge to be your voice in BN so that your needs and well-being would be looked after better than it was before.

“I will serve your regardless of your race, religion and social background – even your political ideology.”

On another matter, Liu said he would like to be the bridge between Taman Desa Wira folk and the government, with respect to the proposed upgrading of their community hall.

“I will bring this matter to UPP president (Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh) so that it would be given the utmost attention. The poor condition of the hall is the manifestation of the opposition’s shortcoming,” he said.

Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa, who is also UPP vice president and its Youth chief, was the guest-of-honour at the dinner.

Later, Liu presented a contribution of RM3,000 to the neighbourhood’s JKKK.
