Sarawak a part of Malaysia, nothing more — Abg Johari

KUCHING: There is no necessity to have any other approach to the position Sarawak is in besides the Federation of Malaysia, where the state’s rights are governed by the constitution, says Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg.
“There is a misconception about why we celebrate July 22. We celebrate July 22 as the day when we are no longer governed by the British government but by our own people when Tan Sri Datuk Amar Kalong Ningkan was appointed chief minister.
“Certain elements are trying to exploit this by instilling emotions among the people. But, we must remember our history and how Sarawak decided to form the Federation of Malaysia with Malaya, Sabah and Singapore.
“That is the position we are in. There is no necessity to have any other approach than The Federation of Malaysia, where we are pretty much governed by the constitution and our rights protected, such as immigration and religious freedom.
“People just want to take advantage and create something emotional, but Sarawakians should know better,” he told reporters at his open house on Friday when asked to comment on the Sarawak For Sarawakians (S4S) gathering to commemorate Sarawak’s Independence.
Abang Johari said the unity and harmony in Sarawak must be defended, as it’s something uniquely Sarawak.
“Open house in Sarawak is in itself unique. They are always celebrated with everybody of all races and religions.
“As the chief minister has said before, this is something we must defend. That is why we do not like extreme views to take root here.
“This is a platform for us to foster friendship with one another, while focusing on developing the state in a more organised manner.
“I am glad to see that despite the uncertain economy, people can still celebrate this festival in moderation yet as merry as usual,” he said.
Among some of the visitors to his open house were some state cabinet ministers, politicians, political party leaders and community leaders.-Borneo Post
