KUCHING: Clean water has been distributed since last Friday to rural villagers in various parts of the state who are critically affected by the current dry spell.
State Welfare director Abang Shamsudin Abang Seruji, when contacted yesterday, said that as of Sunday, 10,200 boxes of bottled water (1.5 liter bottles) had been distributed to several villages in Samarahan, Betong and Mukah.
The Public Works Department (JKR)’s mobile water tank unit also went to Kampung Mantung Mara-u in Serian, where 50,400 litres of water was distributed to 758 villagers from 160 families.
Abang Shamsudin said his office aimed to act fast to ease the discomfort of those in need, especially those who live in areas that are not accessible by roads.
Since Friday, bottled water were sent to villages in Betong, such as Kampung Buda, Kampung Medang (Spaoh), Rumah Panjang Tanjung Perpat (Kabong) and Kampung Serabang (Pusa).
Affected villages in Samarahan were Kampung Tanjung Tanglong, Kampung Sungai Ba, Kampung Tegelam dan Kampung Lubok Samsu (Simunjan).
The department also distributed 2,228 boxes of bottled water to Batang Igan on Friday and another 1,252 boxes would be sent there today.
Abang Shamsudin also did not rule out the possibility of sending water to affected areas in Bau and Sarikei.-Borneo Post
