Ban on firecrackers, fireworks still on — Police Commissioner

Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman

KUCHING: The ban on firecrackers and fireworks will remain during the Hari Raya celebration, said State Police Commissioner Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman.
Sabtu said he had directed all district police heads to monitor and conduct operations to prevent the setting off of fireworks and firecrackers due to safety.
“The ban is still maintained. Patrolling units and motorcycle patrolling units (URB) have been directed to make arrests and seizure should there be offences committed. Those selling illegal fireworks or firecrackers are also committing an offence,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He however said the ‘pop-pop’ type of firecrackers and ‘Happy Boom/Magic Pop’ are allowed as the component does not contain explosive substances and are not dangerous.
“I would like to remind the people to adhere to the law to avoid any unforeseen circumstances like injury and death as well as fire,” he added.
He also gave a stern warning to the public that it would be an offence to manufacture, possess or import firecrackers and fireworks.
The offence comes under Section 4(2) of the Explosives Act 1957 which provides an imprisonment term of up to five years or a fine of RM10,000 or both upon conviction.
Meanwhile for the offence of playing and setting off of fireworks and firecrackers, the offender could be sentenced to a month in jail of a fine up to RM100 or both under Section 9(5) of the Minor Offences Act 1955. -Borneo Post.
