SIBU: The police have been instructed to leave no stone unturned in their search for the masterminds or owners of gambling centres in the state.
Deputy Home Affairs Minister Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar assured they would not compromise on the matter as the future of the younger generation was at stake.
He also wanted ‘Ops Dadu’ to be continued to nab the ringleaders and weed out the menace.
“Gambling cuts across the board and so, we do not want our children to be involved in gambling as this could ruin their future besides giving rise to social problems,” Wan Junaidi told a press conference here on Sunday.
He warned that these days gambling can be carried out via laptops, tablets and even mobile phones.
“I hope that local authorities can work together with police so that offenders will have their businesses closed, including disconnecting electricity and water supply to their premises.”
He also hoped that stiffer action would be taken against the offenders, including barring them from obtaining licence.
Noting that gambling had penetrated the rural areas, he urged everybody including parents to be on their guard and monitor their children’s activities.
“Those operating gambling have no conscience and do not care if a person loses all his money and has a family to feed.”
Asked if the move to prevent those caught operating gambling from applying for licence in future has been implemented, he said the matter was not under KDN jurisdiction.
“If it is a club licence it is given by other agency but licence related to business houses like karaoke, night clubs and so on, it is issued by local authority.”
He hoped the local authority would reduce the issuance of such licence even though it provided revenue for them.
On drugs in the state, he noted it was ranked the lowest in the country in terms of substance abuse.
He disclosed that drugs especially synthetic drugs, methamphetamine and amphetamine were brought into the country via the Philippines or China.
“I urge authorities in particular at the airports in Sibu or other places like Kuching, Miri and border checkpoints to be beefed up to prevent drugs entering our country,” he stressed.
Present at the press conference were state deputy Immigration director Shawal Hamfatullah and Sibu chief Raymond Entalai. -Borneo Post.
