Education Ministry gives over RM25m to S’wak schools

KUCHING: The Education Ministry today handed over aid totalling RM25.355 million to 153 Chinese National type (SJKC), 99 mission and 10 conforming secondary schools in Sarawak under its Pakej Rancangan Khas (PRK) for this year.

The cheques were distributed to their respective principals, headmasters and school board chairmen by state Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Fatimah Abdullah who represented Chief Minister Adenan Satem at the function.

Also present was Deputy Education Minister Senator Chong Sin Woon.

Fatimah said the aid was a manifestation of the federal government’s continuing care and concern for such schools.

She said the Chinese National type schools would get RM7.395 million from the amount, mission schools RM15.080 million and conforming schools, the remaining RM2.88 million.

She advised the headmasters and principals concerned to use the aid immediately and properly.

Fatimah, meanwhile, said the state still needed a huge budget to improve many schools, especially those in its rural areas that were in very bad condition.

“The state Education Department has identified 483 buildings and 198 boarding houses that are in critical condition.

“Besides that, 30 out of the 31 district education offices yearn to have their own buildings in order to function more efficiently,” she said.

She also said the department had identified some 9,487 projects costing RM642.23 million to improve, maintain and upgrade schools.

An allocation of RM95 million had been received from the ministry last year, she said.
