KUCHING: The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) lauded the collaborative efforts of the Royal Malaysia Police and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development that led to the creation of the Missing Children’s Portal (Portal Kanak-Kanak Hilang) launched this week.
According to a press release from Unicef yesterday, digital platforms such as this not only support efforts to report and locate missing children by getting alerts out in a timely fashion, but also enables the public to engage with law enforcement personnel in providing relevant information that may assist in the search.
“Children who are missing are at greater risk of being abused, exploited and trafficked.
“In many cases, children sometimes take the initiative themselves to leave home in order to escape violence, neglect or in the hope of earning a living,” it said.
The lack of birth documentation places unregistered children at an even higher degree of risk, exploitation and abuse.
“With the launch of the missing children’s portal and the commitment of stakeholders such as the government, law enforcement, parents and the public to protect children at home and on the streets, we hope that the number of children who go missing will be reduced, and that the 338 children who are still missing can be found and brought to safety,” said Unicef. -Borneo Post.
