KUCHING: Sarawak National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) will be going to the ground, especially rural communities, to explain government policies after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Its president Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg said among policies that still confused the people was the implementation of Goods and Service Tax (GST) effective April this year.
He explained that generally those in rural areas still thought GST was a burden, not realising it was taken to reduce the people’s burden.
“Among the approaches the State Government has taken are to reduce our electricity tariffs and the abolishment of toll collection as well as GST exemption in local council services.
“These are the things we (Saberkas) need to explain to people so we will be going to the ground after Hari Raya,” he said during Bubur Lambuk and Bubur Pedas distribution at the State Information Department at Jalan Diplomatik yesterday.
The Badan Kebajikan Kakitangan Islam (BKKI) and the department jointly held the event sponsored by Bernas, Bank Rakyat Kota Padawan, Sarawak Al-Islah Association and Saberkas.
He later presented contributions to 10 orphans from SMK Bako, and distributed ‘bubur lambuk’ and ‘bubur pedas’ to staff from various departments and agencies under Communication and Multimedia Ministry and to the sponsors.
Saberkas secretary-general Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and State Information director Abang Sardon Abang Hashim were among those present.
