MCC gets RM40 million for roads

MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) has been allocated RM40 million for the improvement and maintenance of roads this year.

Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the allocation from the federal government would enable the projects to be carried out according to schedule.

“Those projects have long been listed and they can now be carried out with the approved allocation,” he told a press conference yesterday.

“I want the people to know that every road project is only carried out once the allocation for it is approved and received. There is no such thing as apply yesterday and received today. The people should not believe those who always want to take credit for things that have long been planned by the government.”

According to him, such individuals would have themselves photographed pointing at locations and when the projects materialise later would claim credit for themselves.

“But the project actually kicked off because the allocation has just arrived. In fact, the projects have long been on the council’s list, merely waiting to kick off,” he said.

In view of this, he said the list of projects for this year would be available from www.miricouncil.gov.my to let the public know which roads or facilities would be improved, resurfaced or upgraded this year.

“However, this allocation is only for projects under MCC. There are also different allocations for projects which are not under MCC, such as those under the Public Works Department,” he added.

Meanwhile, Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai said Lee had worked to expedite the allocation of grants.

“These projects are based on requests and feedback from the people, which go through our YB (Lee) and were forwarded to the council. The projects are listed based on their priority.

“This all takes time because it involves the documentation process such as drawings for the project, which need to be submitted to the authorities concerned. So we are very thankful to Lee for ensuring that all these projects would materialise,” he said.

Lai pointed out that some of the projects are already in progress while others would commence soon, adding that all projects must be completed this year.

“We want to also put up the work programme so that the people know when the project will start. If the particular project does not commence according to the date, they can inform us immediately,” he said.

The list of projects will be available by tomorrow, while the work schedule will be available after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Roads or facilities in dire need of upgrading but are not on the list can be highlighted to MCC for consideration.-Borneo Post
