Age just a number, senior citizens told

MIRI: Senior citizens here are told to always keep themselves active and not see their age as a hindrance to being involved actively in any activity.

This advice came from Assistant Minister of Early Childhood Education and Family Development, Rosey Yunus, who said they should not stop carrying out their daily activities just because they are ageing.

“Do not worry about your age. The most important thing is that you are healthy enough to still carry on with whatever activities you see fit,” she said when speaking at a ceremony to distribute ‘bubur lambuk’ organised by the Miri Senior Citizens Activity Centre (Pawe) yesterday.

Rosey was representing the Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development, Datuk Fatimah Abdullah.

According to her, being active keeps a person young and healthy despite their age.

“If you are active, you will also be healthy, because being active is what keeps you young physically and mentally, even when your age shows otherwise,” she claimed.

Touching on Pawe Miri, Rosey praised the committee for making the centre one of the most active Pawe centres in Sarawak.

She said this was proven by the many activities carried out by the committee members at the centre.

“I must also congratulate the committee for doing an excellent job in managing the centre and keeping the premises in order which enable the members to make full use of the centre to carry out their activities,” she said.

In view of this, Rosey said she would try to secure funds to help the centre carry out its building extension and improve its facilities.

“I hope we will soon get some funds so that Pawe Miri can carry out its building extension and improve its current facilities, so that more activities can be carried out for members here,” she said.

Touching on the number of registered members of Pawe and Senior Citizens Service Centre (PPWE) in Sarawak, Rosey said the number had grown from 34,077 in 2009 to a whopping 288,999 this year.

“This goes to show that our senior citizens realise that it is important for them to stay active and be involved in activities organised for them by PPWE and Pawe,” she said.

She disclosed that the government had also allocated a total of RM233,310 to seven Pawe statewide this year, to help the centres operate smoothly.

“For PPWE, there are 13 centres in Sarawak but only three had applied for allocation. Therefore the government has allocated RM22,000 to PPWE Kuching, RM16,600 to Sarikei and RM12,500 to Miri,” she said.

Rosey also pointed out that a total of 22,491 people received senior citizen assistance from the Welfare Department totalling to RM40,829,400 annually.- Borneo Post
