BINTULU: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing praised the police for shooting dead four armed robbers near here early today (Jan 1) and urged them to step up measures to tackle crime in the constituency.
Tiong, who is Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president, defended the police by stating that they were not trigger-happy but merely discharged their duty to protect the public.
“The public should not fear the police if they have not committed any crime,” he said in a statement, adding that he supported the exercise to solve crime in Bintulu.
Sarawak Commissioner of Police Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman, in a statement today, said police shot dead four suspected robbers early today following a car chase and a confrontation in an oil palm plantation near Bintulu.
He said the police believe they were involved in at least three armed robberies in Bintulu last month.
Tiong said the suspects also fired at police after they crashed their vehicle and the police fired back in self-defence.
