Be prepared to listen and help, Talib says

BINTULU: Local community leaders must respond to the people’s requests so they do not have to complain out of frustration, said Tourism Assistant Minister Datuk Talib Zulpilip.

“You must be efficient in carrying out your tasks and not wait until the people start to voice out their anger and disappointment,” he said.

Talib gave this advice when presenting reappointment certificates to 28 community leaders at Bintulu Resident’s Office yesterday.

“You have to remember your responsibility as a grassroots leader – serving the community as a representative of the government,” said the Jepak assemblyman.

He congratulated those reappointed and said it was a sign of their commitment, good performance and acceptance by the community.

Every community leader, he added, must be prepared to listen and assist if approached by the public.

“You cannot simply say this is not my job as you can link them to the relevant agencies,” he said.

He would find out why some were not reappointed as the decision to drop their names was not solely taken based on complaints about their performance.

“I will investigate first to find out if the allegation is true,” he added.

He said since they were given allowances, there was no reason not to attend any function that called for their presence.

“As a community leader, don’t play too much politics which is not based on the truth. We all have our own tasks and responsibilities so let’s do our job to the best of our ability,” Talib said.

District officer Tuah Suni called on all community leaders to equip themselves with the latest knowledge and technology.

He said application of technology such as whatsapp could be utilised to be update on any event or activity.

“When you get the information early, you will be more responsive and alert on the latest development which enable you to be more effective as a leader,” said Tuah.
