‘Message on state assembly dissolution untrue’

KUCHING: A message that says the State Legislative Assembly will be dissolved on Feb 25 and polling day will be on March 19 has gone viral on social media.

The message also mentions that nomination day will be on March 6, postal voting on March 13 and early voting on March 16.

As it contained specific details, many who received it believed it to be ‘authentic’.

State BN secretary general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi, however, dismissed it as “mere speculations” and told The Borneo Post that only Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem can decide on the dissolution date.

“The rest such as the dates for nomination, postal votes and polling day will have to be decided by the Election Commission (EC) after the announcement of state assembly dissolution by the chief minister,” said Dr Rundi.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing dismissed the message as inaccurate as by the date mentioned as the day of dissolution state BN would not have settled the dispute between its component party Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and BN friendly United People’s Party (UPP) as well as between Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras).

“Feb 25 is too early. I think by that time, the dispute between these parties is not settled yet. Until the dispute between these four parties is settled, state election cannot be called,” said the Land Development Minister.

Meanwhile, PBB information chief Dato Peter Minos pointed out that the information had not been verified, thus should not be taken seriously.

“That information is not verified. Thus far, we all have been led to think the state polls might be in March but nobody knows any specifics about the exact dates of state assembly dissolution and polling day.

“Up to now, I believe only the chief minister has some idea on dissolution date while EC cannot make any decision on nomination and polling dates because the chief minister has not announced the dissolution of the state assembly.”

Minos, who is the Samarahan District Council chairman, said because many people had been speculating on the state election, the message that had gone viral probably came from one of the eager speculators.

“Those circulating messages claiming specifics such as this one are still speculating, even if she or he may claim to be an insider,” he elaborated. - Borneo Post
