MIRI: About RM300,000 has been set aside towards helping some 2,000 under-privileged pupils from 50 primary schools across the Sibuti parliamentary constituency.
The ‘Back To School’ campaign is run under the ‘Help The People Programme (Membara) — a collaboration between Sibuti Parliamentary Constituency Service Centre and Special Affairs Department (Jasa).
According to Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, the assistance comes in the form of a set of school uniforms including socks and shoes to every recipient.
“This education assistance is our ongoing programme to help needy students. We have allocated about RM300,000 for this purpose. We hope that this aid would help lighten economic burden of these families.
“It is also our hope that there would be no reason for parents in the rural areas to not send their children to school,” he told reporters after presenting the assistance to 50 pupils of SK Kampung Beraya at Janmi School Shop in Centre Point Commercial Centre here yesterday.
Back on the programme, Ahmad Lai said his service centre and Jasa had been distributing assistance to needy students since Nov 30, covering the majority of schools across the constituency.
In addition, he said the service centre also took the initiative to distribute learning materials to underprivileged pupils in Sibuti, who were going to sit for the UPSR.
“For secondary schools, the education assistance given is in the form of government grants slated for improving facilities such as school fields, as well as construction of new class blocks and carparks,” he said.
The presentation was witnessed by Miri Jasa officer Lukanisman Awang Sauni, councillors from Subis District Council and Janmi School Shop owner Jess Liu. - Borneo Post
