Amanah to contest 11 seats in Sarawak state polls

KUCHING: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) wants to contest 11 seats in the next state election.

Its state election director Dr Mohamad Jolhi named the seats as town constituencies of Pantai Damai, Satok, Samariang, Tupong, Demak Laut, Batu Kitang, Muara Tuang, Kabong, Beting Maro, Senadin and Samalaju.

However, he said the final decision would depend on the seat negotiation with other state Pakatan Harapan partners – Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Democratic Action Party (DAP).

“We are still negotiating with both PKR and DAP.

“We will agree with any decision made from the seat negotiation,” Mohamad, who is state Amanah vice chairman, told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Being a new political party, he admitted that, financially, it would not be easy for the party to contest more constituencies this time.

He said Amanah preferred to contest in town areas as the party believed that urban voters were generally more aware of current issues affecting the country and state.

To a question, Mohamad said state Amanah was ready to face Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) in the next state election.

Sarawak PAS recently announced it would be contesting in at least 11 state constituencies in the next state polls.

Among the seats PAS was eyeing were Beting Maro, Sebuyau, Sadong Jaya, Muara Tuang, Samariang, Pantai Damai, Jepak, Samalaju, Lambir, Senadin, Batu Kawah and Dudong.

On the other hand, PKR recently announced that it was eyeing 43 seats and would retain all its incumbents – Baru Bian (Ba Kelalan), See Chee How (Batu Lintang) and Ali Biju (Krian) – for the next state election.

The party also said it was finalising candidates for Tupong, Batu Kitang, Lingga, Simanggang, Saribas, Layar, Machan, Nangka, Murum, Marudi, Telang Usan and Mulu.

Meanwhile, state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, when contacted yesterday, said it was still too early for the party to announce the number of seats that it would contest in, as the situation had changed with the addition of new state seats.

In March this year, state DAP declared that it would contest 30 seats.-Borneo Post
