KUCHING: SPDP members numbering 110 defected to Teras last week, which further boosted the on-going Teras membership drive in Krian state constituency.
Forty-eight of them are from Rumah Mat @ Ring, Tembawai Kapok, Awik and 38 are from Rh Budin, Lubok Kapok, Kabo while 24 are from Rumah Benbali Tapang Ujan, Mudong.
They decided to join Teras because they have confidence in Teras leadership and believe in its political struggle through Barisan Nasional (BN), said Teras Krian branch chairman Banyie Beriak.
Banyie, who is also Teras deputy secretary-general, also said the new Teras members pledged to support BN in the next state election.
“They resigned from SPDP because the party now have lost their direction to help us living in the rural areas. Their (SPDP) leaders are not seen around Saratok. They are now joining Teras because Teras leaders led by Saratok MP Tan Sri William Mawan are always around helping the people and extending development project allocations through his MRP fund. They said it’s time to change,” Banyie reported when contacted yesterday.
“They chose Teras for a better political future,” he stressed.
The SDPD defectors handed over their applications to him personally, he continued, adding some even handed to him their SPDP membership cards to be returned to SPDP.
To date, Teras Krian has more than 4,000 members including applications that are under process.
Krian is one of the seats that Teras is eyeing. However based on political movement on the ground, SPDP and PBB are also interested to wrest the seat for BN from opposition PKR.
The incumbent assemblyman for Krian is PKR state vice president Ali Biju, who beat the then SPDP deputy president Datuk Peter Nyarok who contested under the BN ticket by a handsome majority in the last state election.-Borneo Post
