SUPP slammed for demanding UPP chief to resign

KUCHING: United People’s Party (UPP) Serian branch has slammed Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) leaders for demanding that UPP president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh resign from active politics.

Its chairman Councillor Senior William Rade described the call as ‘mischievous’ and uncalled for.

Supporting the statements made by his party’s deputy president Datuk Dr Jerip Susil and other UPP branch leaders in the southern, central and northern regions, he said no amount of demand, statements or pressure from outsiders could in anyway dislodge their president.

“We will never allow that to happen. Let me stress to our rival that we are strongly and solidly behind YB Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh’s leadership. We will not waver even an inch but give him our solid support. He (Wong) is part and parcel of UPP. He, together with other senior party leaders, has successfully manoeuvred the party through thick and thin until where the party stands today.

“The party under YB Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has implemented many good policies for the benefit of the people. Thus our bitter rival’s statement to demand that he should retire is mischievous and bankrupt of good and positive ideas. They know very well that he has the solid support of the people, that’s why they (SUPP) demand that he should retire,” Senior said in a statement yesterday.

He added that by putting such a statement, the SUPP leaders were making a mockery of themselves and at the same time, revealed their true colours.

“They are not sincere to address real issues at all. As such, UPP will not be trapped and succumb to that kind of rhetoric, tasteless statement. If any negotiation is going to happen before the coming state election, we demand that Dato Sri Wong be around and lead the party. We want him to continue leading the party for many more years to come.

“His leadership is still needed, especially at this critical juncture when the state election is around the corner. As a veteran politician who has the heart for the people, he knows when to call it a day and arrange for another echelon leader in the party to take over,” he asserted.

Senior said UPP would remain united and be politically vigilant at all times, although certain quarters were bitter of their success.-Borneo Post
