DAP Sarawak condemns the politics of bully and fearpracticed by the BarisanNasional in Betong.Betong BN uses a TuaRumah to threaten the carrying out of the medi-camp by DAP’s Impian Sarawak team in a church at Ulu Layar near Betong town.
Under ourImpian Sarawak program, DAP Sarawak will have a medical camp in the church at Ulu Layar, Betong on 6-7-2015.We have arranged for 5 doctors to be in the team, including 3 dentists with portable dental chairs and more than 100 kg of various types of medicines for dispensing, if necessary.
The Impian Sarawak medical camp is fully equipped with doctors to carry out medical check-ups, give consultation, dispensing medicine and recommending certain follow-ups. It is run like a temporary mini hospital.
Many of the long-house folks have been neglected by the BN government all this while. Medical services provided by BN did not reach their longhouses, and many of them have no means or find it difficult and inconvenient to travel to hospitals or clinic for check-ups.
So far, we have successfully carried out these medi-camps in the kampongs in Bawang Assan, Bintangor, Bau, BatuKitang and RantauPanjang (Batu Kawa) and have provided medical services to more than 1000 patients.
When news of our BetongImpian Sarawak medi-camp project starts to spread, the pastor of the church started to get pressure and even warnings from the BN’s appointed tuarumah of a long house nearby, RumahLugat. The pastor was not deterred by the warnings.
After the warnings, hooligans from the longhouse approached the pastor, insinuating threats and intimidation on the safety of the pastor and his family and also implying disturbance to the medi-camp. Despite the police at the BetongBalai Police being informed of the threat and inteimidation, it remains unemphatic and refused to take any action against the perpetrator of the intimidation.
Due to the fear for the safety of his family, the pastor has requested us to cancel the medi-camp at the church.
In consideration for the safety of the pastor and his family, we have thus decided to move the medi-camp to our DAP office in Betong Town. In addition, we will arrange for transport for the folks from the various long-houses to our Betong DAP office.
It is regrettable that the Betong BN, in its zealousness to protect its political turf, sacrifices the opportunity of the rural people to receive medical treatment which was brought to their doorsteps.
The Betong BN has put its political interest over and above the interest of the rural people of Betong.
It is already shameful on the BN government in that rural people have been neglected and deprived of proper medical services. It is even more shameful on the BN that when the DAP wishes to provide such service to the people in the rural area, the BN Government’s agents try to stop it with such bully and fear tactic.
If Adenan is a true Chief Minister for all Sarawakian, he should immediately direct the TuaRumahLugat to publicly apologise to the pastor and the rural people of Betong and to give his assurance not to sabotage the medi-camp to be held in the church. Otherwise, his so-called people-friendly image is but a farce while he continues to condone such politics of bully and fear at the grass-root level.
We give AdenanSatem and his Government’s appointed TuaRumahLugat till tomorrow 11:00 a.m. to make the apology and announcement, failing which the medi-camp will be moved to the Betong town at our DAP Betong office at Medan Bandar BaruBetong.
