DAP cannot be trusted: Larry Sng

Merger talk with state DAP over, says SWP president

KUCHING: SWP president Larry Sng insists that the merger discussion between the party and state DAP is over.

“DAP talks with SWP have concluded and the result is we will go our own way in this election because DAP cannot be trusted.

“On 25 Dec, DAP issued their list of candidates overlapping the seats which were agreed to have been allocated to us. Hence what we have built all these months and years towards a sincere and long lasting cooperation is a farce. DAP was just wasting our time.

“We will not allow them to play us out again. Let the voters decide who they want in this coming election. We will put up a good fight,” Sng told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He was responding to DAP publicity secretary Wong King Wei’s announcement at a press conference on Wednesday that negotiations on merger between the two parties had been completed.

Sng said he was fully aware of Wong’s statement but questioned the intention of state DAP for putting up confusing statements as to him, further discussions were futile when the initial agreement was not honoured.

Meanwhile, on the number of seats to be contested by SWP, Sng said the party would contest in “a few seats” but declined to disclose further.

Like state DAP not honouring the terms of agreements but took the liberty to announce their own candidates and areas, Sng said close to election time, there would be a lot of surprises.

“There will be a lot of surprises. A lot of candidates will be popping up from both opposition and state BN parties, especially in the areas where agreement could not be reached. For example, there will be a lot of cases like DAP breaking the agreement. This is exactly the kind of situation that will give rise to many candidates in one area,” said Sng.

Though declining to disclose the number of seats and the possible candidates of his party, Sng confirmed that George Lagong has returned to SWP but would not contest due to health reason.

On Meluan seat which is held by Wong Judat, who is still a SWP member, Sng preferred to keep mum on the seat and even the possibility of a new candidate for the seat.

“SWP will contest in a few seats. I will only reveal them in the course of time,” said Sng.

Sng who will be contesting in the new seat of Bukit Goram said as the seat was carved out from his former seat of Pelagus, there were some changes in the racial composition of the constituency.

“There will be an increase in the percentage of Chinese voters in the area,” said Sng.

Over 22 per cent of voters in Pelagus constituency were Chinese who were mostly in the town area. Now with Kapit town being part of the new constituency of Bukit Goram, the percentage of Chinese voters has increased in comparison to Iban and Malay voters in the area.-Borneo Post
