SARAWAK FOCUS: Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen seems to like the idea of DAP going it alone - without PKR - in the coming state election.
But why not? Go fight it alone. Chong will never know DAP’s strength if he is afraid to try. He will not know whether or not the Dayak heartland is ready for DAP, which even now is perceived as a party for urbanites, no thanks to its preference for urban seats from the start.
Go for those rural seats because that’s the idea behind DAP’s Impian Sarawak programme anyway.
DAP has spent a lot of money, time and effort trying to woo Sarawak’s rural voters – more than PKR had, according to Chong, so PKR, step aside if you are not ready for a head-on collision.
“Given the way PKR operates, which is active only during election time, my answer is that there may be or there may be not. But, what I want to say is we have identified potential candidates to contest in certain rural seats which were previously contested by PKR.
“Why do we move to the rural areas? The reason – we see a vacuum left by the opposition candidates after each election but before we move in we have to make sure we have potential candidates to contest in those areas,” Chong was quoted as saying.
The way he puts it, DAP is all set for the final thrust, ready to crush whoever and whomsoever is in its way, PKR included.
A confident Chong said: “Let us compete in a positive manner, rather than PKR trying to badmouth and sulking over DAP’s effort to go rural.”
Well, PKR maybe, in the word of Chong, sulking but who will be sulking next if PKR should ever feel drawn to the urban seats.
If See Chee How could make it the last time, there is no reason to believe PKR doesn’t have a fighting chance in seats like Batu Kawa, won by DAP’s Christina Chiew and Dudong, by DAP’s Yap Hoi Liong.
DAP, PKR and the BN fighting for supremacy will be a spectacle. Sarawakians will get to decide if it is party or candidate or both that should get their votes.
If that’s what Chong wants, he will get it.
BN, I believe, loves the crowd. The more the merrier.- The Ant Daily
